Overview

Structural platform for recycling centre with access roads and car park.

Construction

IBAA (Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate) Class 1A fill was used to create a structural platform. IBAA Type 1 subbase was used underneath the surface materials of concrete and asphalt. Due to the large amounts of IBAA Class 1A fill, the IBAA Type 1 subbase only required placing at a depth of 150mm. Concrete and asphalt surfacing was laid at 250mm thickness over the IBAA Type 1 subbase.

Benefit

IBAA is an extremely cost-effective material when compared to Primary Aggregates and BP UK is working towards a verified Carbon Footprint. There are also advantages logistically when using IBAA due to the low density of the material allowing for fewer vehicle movements as this gives volumetric advantages over primary materials.

Sustainability

The extraction of primary aggregates for construction and transport to construction sites places enormous pressure on the environment. Mineral mining accounts for 2.8% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. The use of manufactured aggregates from IBA prevents landfilling, mining of virgin raw materials and contributes to the circular economy.
