Overview

Infrastructure works with associated roads and footpaths.

Construction

IBAA (Incinerator Bottom Ash Aggregate) was supplied from our Castle Bromwich plant in Birmingham. IBAA Type 1 subbase and IBAA Class 1A fill products were used for drainage and service trench backfill on the spine roads and footpaths. Trench reinstatement depths on the site ranged between 200mm and 800mm.

The roads were dug at 800mm for the road box formation (cut and fill procedure). IBAA Class 1A fill was then installed, building up to a depth of 300mm to the underside of the kerb line and road subbase.

Footpaths were also constructed after edgings were laid using IBAA Class 1A fill at a depth of 100-300mm to the underside of Type 1 subbase and surfaced with asphalt.

Benefit

IBAA is an extremely cost-effective material when compared to Primary Aggregates and BP UK is working towards a verified Carbon Footprint. There are also advantages logistically when using IBAA due to the low density of the material allowing for fewer vehicle movements as this gives volumetric advantages over primary materials.

Sustainability

The extraction of primary aggregates for construction and transport to construction sites places enormous pressure on the environment. Mineral mining accounts for 2.8% of the global greenhouse gas emissions. The use of manufactured aggregates from IBA prevents landfilling, mining of virgin raw materials and contributes to the circular economy.
